The Summer of 2013 has provided a great kick off for the Kate Mc Garrigle Foundation. We had several projects in development and they all came together at one time. The Foundation has an interest in each one of these endeavors and through the summer we have been able to raise a sizeable amount of funding for KMF and also quite a bit for the support of the Kate Mc Garrigle Fund, administered by Mc Gill University Health Centre.
The funds were raised through two benefit screenings of our movie, “Sing Me The Songs that Say I Love You: A Concert for Kate Mc Garrigle- one in Brookyn and one in Montreal.
We also co-produced two benefit concerts. In June, partnering with the incredible Brooklyn Academy of Music there was : Kate’s Kids, featuring Rufus Wainwright, Martha Wainwright, Norah Jones, Mark Ronson and Emmylou Harris. In August, the concert was called “Cheminant Vers Ma Ville”, and featured not only the Wainwright and Mc Garrigle family, but other popular Quebec singers/songwriters and musicians.
Also, in June, Nonesuch released our two CD set “Sing Me the Songs” a compilation album pulling songs from the movie and some of the best performances from each of the Kate Tribute shows we have done over the last three and a half years.
July brought us Rufus’ fortieth birthday celebration in Madrid. A brilliant sold-out concert was given at The Teatro Real, one of the most beautiful opera houses in Europe. There was a lovely reception after the show, replete with birthday cake…and then off to a Flamenco spot where the partygoers danced the night away.
In August, the family returned to Kate’s hometown of Outremont, a neighborhood in Montreal, for a two day event. The celebration began with dedication of La Place de Kate Mc Garrigle, a pocket park the town has named for her which features an original Robert Wilson chair. That evening we had a benefit screening of the movie at the Theatre Outremont.
The following day, August 8, we presented two shows of Cheminant Vers Ma Ville, a concert featuring Rufus Wainwright, Martha Wainwright, Anna Mc Garrigle, Jane Mc Garrigle and many other family members including five well known French Canadians- Robert Charlebois, Pierre Lapointe, Fanny Bloom, Michel Rivard and Marie Michele Desrosiers. It was a magical evening of Kate and Anna Mc Garrigle songs, mostly all in French- a true celebration of their heritage of great French Canadian songwriters. The guest stars also brought some of their own flavors and songs to the evening.
All these projects have helped fill the Foundations coffers and also enabled us to make a $25,000 donation to the Sarcoma Foundation of America to complete the second Kate Mc Garrigle Sarcoma Research Grant. MUHC received $20,000, also raised through support of our projects.
