It was a Rufus trifecta in Los Angeles ! On Friday, September 20, Rufus gave a concert in the beautiful backyard of Brad and Valerie Cohen in Westwood. The performance, originally the result of a generous donation to the Kate McGarrigle Foundation by the Cohens and three other couples (Deedee Dorskind and Brad Tabach-Bank, Joanne and Joel Mogy, and Marcie and Howard Zelikow) at last year’s Christmas 101 show at UCLA, was transformed into a benefit membership drive for the CAP Center at UCLA. More than 100 people came to enjoy the evening of cocktails, exotic tapas and a lovely show by Rufus. For more on the evening, please read the Hollywood Reporter’s review.
The next day, following special screening of Sing Me the Songs that Say I Love You: A Concert for Kate McGarrigle at UCLA’s Hammer Museum, Rufus entertained the 400-plus attendees with some of his mother’s songs from the film as well as a couple of favorites like “Somewhere Over the Rainbow” and his own “Candles”.
Finally, Rufus was brought in to perform as a special guest at Showtime’s Emmy Eve party at the Sunset Tower Hotel in Los Angeles. Packed with TV celebrities and industry notables, the party included actors like Edie Falco from Nurse Jackie, John Benjamin Hickey from The Big C, Allison Janney, Damian Lewis, Claire Danes and Mandy Patinkin, all from the hit show Homeland. Rufus delighted the crowd of 200 with a short, but compelling four song set. Mandy Patinkin, a devoted fan, sat enthralled throughout the songs, jumping with joy when Rufus agreed to sing his request – “Cigarettes and Chocolate Milk”.
